MK Thunder earn a point at Streatham

Goals from Tomas Rubes and Alex Whyte helped Thunder to a point at Streatham IHC on the opening night of the 2018-19 NIHL season.

The first period was scoreless but did see Michael Statford drop gloves with Adam Wood before Tom Carlon and Michael Farn threw down to the delight of those at Streatham Ice & Leisure Centre.

It took until the 32nd minute for the game’s first goal to come when Tom Annetts in the MKT net was beaten by Canadian import Alex Roberts to put the hosts 1-0 ahead.

The lead held through the end of the second period but was gone 19 seconds into the third when Rubes struck after being setup by Carlon to make it a 1-1 game.

Roberts gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage in the 52nd minute before Rio Grinell-Parke fed Alex Whyte for Thunder’s second equalizer two minutes later.

Neither team was able to find another goal in regulation which meant a point earned for both teams, before the hosts snagged the bonus point for a win in the third minute of Overtime when Farn hit the game-winner for the 3-2 final scoreline.

Thunder return to home ice on Sunday, Sep. 23 for the first league game of 2018-19. The NIHL 1 and NIHL Cup game against Peterborough Phantoms get underway at 6:45 p.m. with tickets set at £10 Adults, £1 Under 16s, £5 16-18, Students, and concessions.
