Thunder faced a completely different task on Sunday, with a visit to the Hive to take on the much fancied Bracknell Bees. As expected the Bees pressed hard from the off but Thunder kept to their tasks well and denied the home side the space to play. With the speed of Thunder’s forward lines they were always a threat on the break and it was one such break that saw Sean Norris skate through the Bees defence to score. Much against the run of play Thunder were 0 – 1 up. With his second goal in two games Logan Prince made it 0 – 2 and much to the shock of the Bees faithful Thunder went into the first break in the lead.
Bees coach Doug Sheppard obviously had words during the break as it was a more focussed Bees that started the second period on a powerplay after Rubes took a hooking penalty just before the break. Thunder’s penalty kill held for a minute but were eventually beaten by a good finish from Bees veteran Ryan Watt. Before Thunder could regroup they found themselves on level terms as Zak Milton fired home to make it 2 – 2. Two further goals in the period gave Bees a comfortable 4 – 2 lead, Zak Milton with his second of the night, and Ryan Watt with his second.
Thunder fought back in the final period looking to reduce the deficit but allowed the impressive Antonov to step in from the wing and put the puck past Jordan Lawday from a narrow angle. Playing as a forward, Trevor LeBlanc finished well a minute later to make it 5 – 3. Despite commendable effort from Thunder in the final ten minutes they weren’t able to get back into the game with Bees eventually adding two more goals through Antonov and David Miller to finish the game 7 – 3 winners.
